Quetzaltenango, Guatemala (August 10-18, 2024)
Our mission in Quetzaltenango took us to a region characterized by beautiful mountains and a vibrant culture, but also one marked by poverty and limited access to healthcare. The local community, though rich in tradition, often struggles to receive adequate medical attention, especially in pediatric eye care.
Under the guidance of Dr. Rhyee at the Bethesda Clinic and Hospital, our team launched an initiative focusing on the most vulnerable—children suffering from untreated vision issues. We performed 15 delicate pediatric eye surgeries, giving these young patients a chance to experience life with improved sight. During the week, we also examined 50 children, many of whom had traveled long distances for our services.

In addition to direct medical care, we prioritized education. We conducted hands-on training sessions for local ophthalmologists, enriching their expertise in pediatric ophthalmology. Collaborating with passionate ophthalmologists from the U.S. and Nepal, we performed 100 cataract and pterygium surgeries. Our Symposium on Advances in Pediatric Ophthalmology attracted local physicians eager to learn, share, and enhance their skills. This work not only provided immediate care but fostered sustainable improvements in local healthcare.
